Program Overview
The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Semester Research Program for U.S. Teachers (Fulbright DA) provides an opportunity for primary and secondary school teachers from the United States to travel abroad for a semester, for three to six months. Participants will pursue individual inquiry projects, take courses for professional development at a host university or institute, and observe and lead master classes and seminars for teachers and students at the host university or local primary and secondary schools. Project Activities
- Individual inquiry project: Teachers will pursue individual inquiry projects supported by practical research at a host institution throughout their professional development experience abroad.
- Three to six-month professional development experience abroad: Outstanding elementary, middle and high school teachers from the United States have the opportunity to take part in a three to six-month professional development experience abroad.
- Professional development courses: Host institutions will provide courses pertaining to the candidate’s subject area and/or inquiry project proposal.
Eligibility Criteria
- A U.S. citizen
- Master’s degree or enrolled in a Master’s program
- Full time K-12 teaching position, including primary and secondary level classroom teachers of all subjects, guidance counselors, curriculum specialists, curriculum heads, talented and gifted coordinators, special education coordinators and media specialists/librarians
- Spend at least 50% of time interacting with students
- Five years of full time teaching experience
- Proven track record of professional development activities and leadership
Grant Benefits
- Round-trip airfare to the host country
- Transportation, lodging, host institution fees and related expenses
- While abroad, grantees will receive a maintenance allowance designed to assist with the costs of living during the program.

- Accident and sickness medical coverage
- Grantees will have the opportunity to apply for professional development funds to support development and research or to cover the expenses of attending a conference or workshop related to their field of teaching expertise.
