Dr. Efrat Shadmi

Dr. Efrat Shadmi is an innovator in health services management in Israel and a driving force for Fulbright Alumni in the north.

During her Fulbright experience at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Dr. Shadmi had the unique opportunity to collaborate with health care model pioneer, Dr. Chad Boult, in a pilot project at the Lipitz Center for Integrated Healthcare. Inspired by this and the advanced research experience she gained during her Fulbright scholarship, Efrat then returned to Israel empowered to utilize the health management tools she had learned in a new project of her own: the Complex Care for Multimorbid Adults Program (CC-MAP). This project is a cooperation between Dr. Shadmi, a faculty member at the Cheryl Spencer Nursing Department at the University of Haifa, Professor Ran Balicer and his team from the Clalit Research Institute and a multidisciplinary team from Clalit Health Services.

The CC-MAP model is currently operating as part of a multi-site research project funded by Clalit and the Gertner Institute within a clustered controlled trial. As part of the CC-MAP, six nurses work with a case-load of about one hundred patients, each receiving a tailored care plan, agreed upon by their personal doctor and nurse and adjusted according to their needs and preferences. A total of six hundred patients in the intervention arm and six hundred in the control are currently participating in the study and data on their health status, quality of care, and healthcare services use is collected. Early results indicate feasibility and acceptability as well as greater likelihood for receipt of integrated multimorbidity care in the CC-MAP intervention.

During her Fulbright Hopkins experience Dr. Shadmi had also had the opportunity to learn under the late Professor Barbara Starfield, an internationally recognized advocate for worldwide primary health care and health equity, who also became her mentor. Today Dr. Shadmi's work follows the path set by Professor Starfield in her research and role as co-editor-in-chief of the International Journal for Health Equity.

In addition to her academic endeavors, Dr. Shadmi also founded the Fulbright Alumni Association of Israel- Haifa and Northern Region (HAAI-HN). She can be contacted at: [email protected].
